IM+ for Lotus Sametime Connection Options

Connection types depend on the corporate policy related to Sametime server access. Generally there are three main connection policies used by the companies. They are listed below along with the descriptions of mobile access approach for each corresponding policy. If unsure which of the itemized cases applies to you, please, contact your system administrator.

Case 1.

Your organization has its Sametime server installed on the machine with external IP address in the Internet, Sametime server ports are open and you can access your Sametime Server from outside the corporate network (e.g. from your laptop).

Instruction: Users download a client application from SHAPE's website and configures it to connect to the Sametime server. Users just enter the same settings (Sametime server address and port) as they have on their desktop clients. If usure what are the correct settings for this case contact your system administrator.


Case 2.

Your organization has its Sametime server installed inside the corporate network and it is not accessible directly. However, a proxy server is provided to enable access from external network (it is HTTP(S) proxy for Sametime).

Instruction: This case is pretty much like the previous one. Users download a client application from SHAPE's website and configures it to connect to the Sametime server by choosing the "HTTP tunneling" in client options and entering proxy IP/address and Sametime IP/address. If usure what are the correct settings for your proxy contact your system administrator.


Case 3.

Your organization has its Sametime server installed inside the corporate network and it is not accessible directly. In this case you may host an own instance of middleware for personal mobile access to your corporate Sametime server.

1. BES server is used in the organisation. The BlackBerry case.

User downloads the middleware installation and install it on the workstation. The installation is easy, requires at most 1 minute, can be installed on virtually any Windows-based PC and requires no additional configuration.

Then users download a client application for BlackBerry and configures it to connect to the middleware. Connection between BES server and middleware should be available. Read also the User Manual.

2. Sametime server is only accessible via VPN*: Pocket PC, Symbian

User downloads the middleware installation and install it on the workstation. The installation is easy, requires at most 1 minute, can be installed on virtually any Windows-based PC and requires no additional configuration.

Then user configures VPN on the mobile device, download IM+ for Sametime client application (for Symbian S80, S80, UIQ or Pocket PC) from SHAPE's website and adjusts it to connect to Sametime via the middleware. If usure how to configure VPN for your network, ask your system administrator.

*VPN (Virtual private network) enables IP traffic to travel securely over a public TCP/IP network by encrypting all traffic from one network to another. A VPN uses "tunneling" to encrypt all information at the IP level. VPN client is empedded to some Nokia and Pocket PC devices or can be additionally downloaded.
